Life in the wardrobe hiring department at PYT is always busy with our costumes travelling to all corners of the country! Over Summer 2016, we provided costumes for a number of new Youth Theatres – from Glasgow (Wizard of Oz), Manchester (Les Misérables) and Essex (The Glass Knight) as well as our regulars from the Mayflower Youth Theatre (Pirates of Penzance), Stagewise (Cats) and the many schools that come back year after year.
Our team of trusty and much valued volunteers meet on a Wednesday for the day’s tasks. On any one day, this can include: checking a hire in; sorting; washing; mending; ‘filing’ costumes or collating one or more hirings to go out; all sustained on laughter, tea and cake!
Our own autumn season was exceptionally exciting this year, with the costumes coming from Welsh National Opera (WNO) for our Candide production. It was with great excitement that four of our volunteers travelled to Cardiff with Nik to select the costumes for the show. It was fascinating to see how a professional opera company wardrobe operates and the WNO warehouse was vast with the huge number of rails draped with beautifully hand-crafted costumes. The thing that was most impressive, was the incredible detail in individual costumes and the rows of handmade boots and shoes for each specific production. It was reassuring to find that many of our own hand-crafted costumes are as good as the professionally produced ones.
